Oh, the habits...
Recently, I heard this quote by Brian Tracy:
The quote had me thinking about my own habits, good and bad. Of course, I’m still glowing about the most recent habit I installed, which includes getting up at 4:45 AM and exercise, but I’ve been thinking about habits on a more invisible level… let me explain…
The part of the quote that really makes me stop to think is, “the habits that have you.” How often do you stop and think about your habits in just that way? If it’s been more than 24 hours, stop right now and give that some thought. What habits have you? What habits are you enslaved to? What habits do you sacrifice to inadvertently, compulsively, or even subconsciously?
These are unpleasant questions to answer.
The answers also illuminate areas for the greatest opportunity of growth.
Habits that have you can be obvious. Those are the ones that people who aren’t even close to you can point at and tell you that you have a problem with (which is so easy for others to do!). The real dangerous ones, and, I would argue, the real culprits for the obvious bad habits, are the ones beneath the surface, the ones no can see. It’s the habitual demeaning and discouraging self talk. It’s the continual self doubt and self de-valuation. It’s the victim mentality. It’s the fixed mindset. It’s these bad habits that, I think, make the biggest difference of all. Left unchecked, these habits will keep you from becoming who you most want to become and doing what you most want to do.
Journal on this: Do any of these habits have you? What can you do to start changing that today, right now?
If you need a positive voice in your head, remember that I believe in you.
